Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is KIN – Kids in Need?
+KIN – Kids in Need is a fully registered, child-focused non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Uganda. Since our establishment in 1996, we have worked tirelessly to support vulnerable children, orphaned youth, and marginalized communities through holistic, sustainable programs.
Our core mission is to restore dignity and provide safe shelter, quality education, essential healthcare, vocational skills training, and psychosocial support. We also run specialized initiatives like Child Labour Free Zones, street child reintegration, and family strengthening programs. KIN operates across Kampala, Wakiso (including Kigungu fishing community), Entebbe, Butaleja, and Mbale districts — impacting thousands of lives annually. We are driven by the belief that every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment and the opportunity to thrive.
2. How can I donate to support KIN's work?
+We offer multiple secure ways to support our programs. Your contribution directly transforms lives:
- PayPal / Credit Card: Secure online donations via our website’s donation portal.
- Mobile Money (Uganda): Airtel Money or MTN MoMo — after filling our donation form, you'll receive the paybill details.
- Bank Transfer: Direct wire transfer to our corporate account (details shared upon request).
- In-kind donations: School supplies, clothing, food items, and sanitary pads can be delivered to our Entebbe office.
After selecting your preferred method on our donation form, you’ll receive confirmation with payment instructions. Every contribution — no matter the size — directly supports shelter, education, medical care, and food security for children in need. Recurring monthly donations are also available and provide sustainable, long-term impact.
3. Where does my donation go? How is it used?
+Your generosity is allocated with full transparency and accountability. Funds are channeled directly into programs that benefit vulnerable children and families:
- 50% – Education & skills training: School fees, scholastic materials, vocational courses for older youth.
- 25% – Nutrition & healthcare: Mobile clinics, maternal care, therapeutic feeding, medical referrals (2,829+ beneficiaries served).
- 15% – Shelter & protection: Safe homes, transit center operations, counseling, and child protection case management (198+ cases handled).
- 10% – Community empowerment & advocacy: Backyard gardening, income-generating activities, child labour free zone committees.
We provide quarterly impact reports and financial summaries to donors. We are committed to the highest standards of stewardship and publish annual audited reports. Over 10,000 street children reintegrated, 520 households with food security, and 200+ women empowered — these are results of transparent, accountable giving.
4. Can I volunteer with KIN? What opportunities exist?
+Absolutely. Volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission. Whether you're a student, professional, or part of a group, we welcome your skills and compassion. Volunteering opportunities include:
- Teaching and tutoring children at our transit home or partner schools.
- Assisting in daily shelter operations and recreational activities.
- Participating in community outreach (health camps, child rights awareness).
- Providing professional services (medical, legal, counseling, photography, IT).
- Administrative and fundraising support.
All volunteers undergo a brief orientation and safeguarding training. To apply, fill out the volunteer form on our website, and our team will reach out within 5–7 days. Long-term, short-term, and international volunteers are all welcome. Together, we create lasting change.
5. Is KIN officially registered and compliant?
+Yes, KIN – Kids in Need is a legally recognized organization. We are registered with the National NGO Bureau of Uganda under registration number INDR21936179NB. Our operations comply with all national regulations, child protection laws, and financial reporting standards.
We maintain active partnerships with local government authorities (District Community Development Offices, Probation Departments) and collaborate with international child rights networks. You can also visit our transit home in Nsambya (Sharing Youth Center) by prior appointment. We welcome visitors, partners, and supporters who want to see our work firsthand.
7. Can I sponsor a child through KIN?
+Yes! Our Child Sponsorship Program creates a one-to-one connection between a sponsor and a vulnerable child. For approximately $35–$50 per month, you can cover a child’s school fees, uniforms, nutritious meals, healthcare, and recreational activities.
Sponsors receive periodic updates, photos, letters from the child, and annual progress reports. Sponsorship is a powerful way to break the cycle of poverty and provide consistent hope. To sponsor, fill out the sponsorship inquiry form on our website, and we will match you with a child in need based on your preferences (age, gender, region). You can also choose to sponsor a child’s vocational training or specialized medical needs.
8. Does KIN work only in Uganda or internationally?
+Our headquarters and direct field operations are based in Uganda — specifically in Kampala, Wakiso (including Kigungu fishing community), Entebbe, Butaleja, and Mbale districts. However, our influence extends beyond Uganda.
Through knowledge sharing and capacity building, we have trained numerous organizations across Africa (including Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Rwanda) to adopt the Child Labour Free Zone model and best practices for street child reintegration. We also collaborate with international donors, diaspora communities, and global child rights networks. While our grassroots work is Uganda-focused, our technical assistance and advocacy have a continental reach.
9. What specific programs does KIN run?
+KIN delivers a comprehensive range of integrated programs for vulnerable children and communities:
- Street Children Reintegration (Transit Program): Emergency shelter, counseling, family tracing, and reintegration for over 10,000+ children in Kampala and Wakiso.
- Child Labour Free Zones: Community-based strategies eliminating child labour and boosting school enrollment — in Kigungu, enrollment grew from 87 to over 1,000 pupils.
